Before the introduction of database management systems, all data permanently stored on a computer system, such as payroll and accounting records, was stored in individual files. A file management system, usually provided by the computer manufacturer as part of the computer s operating system, kept track of the names and locations of the files. The file management system basically had no data model; it knew nothing about the internal contents of files. To the file management system, a file containing a word processing document and a file containing payroll data appeared the same. Knowledge about the contents of a file which data it contained and how the data was organized was embedded in the application programs that used the file, as shown in Figure 4-1. In this payroll application, each of the COBOL programs that processed the employee master file contained a file description (FD) that described the layout of the data in the file. If the structure of the data changed for example, if an additional item of data was to be stored for each employee every program that accessed the file had to be modified. As the number of files and programs grew over time, more and more of a data-processing department s effort went into maintaining existing applications rather than developing new ones. The problems of maintaining large file-based systems led in the late 1960s to the development of database management systems. The idea behind these systems was simple:

Many application developers simply write SQL statements off the top of their heads without giving much thought to designing them for ef cient processing. This is an easy trap to fall into because SQL is a nonprocedural language that gives the false impression that the form of the statement does not matter provided it produces the correct result set. Statements that are not designed can introduce enormous performance issues. For example, I recently reviewed an SQL statement that retrieved about six million rows of data each time it was executed. The application that issued the SQL only required the rst row found. When this statement was run, the entire database seized until the processing was complete. It felt like the lights dimmed in the building from all the resources this one query consumed. It took the developer who xed the problem only about an hour to turn the query into a very ef cient one, but a little bit of thought by the original developer would have avoided the crisis entirely. Here are some considerations regarding query design: Know your data. When writing the SQL statement, you should have some idea of how many rows are in each table, how selective your WHERE predicates are, and how many rows you expect in the result set. The larger the number of rows involved, the more time you should spend thinking about the best way to write the SQL statement. Minimize returned rows. The fewer the rows in the result set, the more ef ciently the query will run. Avoid scans of large tables. For tables over 1000 rows or so, scanning all the rows in the table instead of using an index can be expensive in

The circuit for the solar motor is shown in Figure 6-4, it is a simple circuit, and can easily be assembled on stripboard. Once you have constructed the solar motor driver circuit, you are going to need to mechanically couple the motor to the skewer. You may find if your motor is powerful enough, that you can directly drive the skewer it would be worth investigating bearings to ensure that your skewer turns as freely as possible with a minimum of resistance. If you find your motor struggles to turn the skewer, then use a worm drive to reduce the speed of the motor while increasing torque.

take the definition of a file s content and structure out of the individual programs, and store it, together with the data, in a database. Using the information in the database, the DBMS that controlled it could take a much more active role in managing both the data and changes to the database structure.

The programming required to perform a dynamic query is more extensive than the programming for any other embedded SQL statement. However, the programming is typically more tedious than complex. Figure 18-9 shows a small query program that uses dynamic SQL to retrieve and display selected columns from a user-specified table. The callouts in the figure identify the eight steps in the preceding list.
